This species formally was a variety of  Tillandsia ionantha. It was recently raised to species level and name Tillandsia vanhyningii. It has a caulescent growth habit and is found growing in Chiapas, Mexico on steep rock walls above a Rio Grijalva.  It is stiffer with succulent leaves which blush a pink-peach color when blooming and has purple flowers.
