This very common species is a must for every collection. The bulbous base has thick semi-succulent leaves which recurve. It produces bright red spikes with violet purple flowers. Native to Mexico, Guatemala and Central America it is quite variable. Some have green leaves, some grey, some have pink spikes but most have red spikes and purple petals.
Leaves get more straight when the plant is well watered and hydrated. Leaves will curl as the plant gets more thirsty.
Small plants 1”-3”
Med plants 4”-5”, beginnings of a bulbous base with curly leaves
Large plants 6”+, chunky bulbous base with very curly leaves
(Sizes measured with leaves outstretched, as these can get very curly!)
