This cultivar of the Mexican Tillandsia ionantha var. ionantha, was first described by P. Koide in the J Brom Soci 43:163. 1993. Tillandsia 'Apretado' grows much larger than the typical species and the leaves are succulent, slightly stiffer and more erect. They grow quite large and are reluctant to bloom.
